Vaping in Pop Culture is rarely represented. Aside from bogus news stories, it’s quite rare to see people vaping in films or on TV, which is weird when you consider how many vapers there are across the globe.
Here’s our list of top ten celebrities who are representing vaping in pop culture.
- Leonardo Dicaprio
Leonardo DiCaprio: One of the most famous actors in the world, Leo is the king of vaping in pop culture. Known for films such as The Titanic, Wolf of Wall Street, Inception and Gangs of New York. DiCaprio is regularly spotted at award shows vaping.
2. Samuel L Jackson
Samuel L Jackson: An incredibly prolific actor, with his work spanning almost 50 years. Known for films such as Jackie Brown, Pulp Fiction, xXx and Star Wars Episodes 2 and 3. Consistently uploads pictures of his vapes to twitter.
3. Johnny Depp
Johnny Depp: One of Hollywood’s most versatile actors. Depp is known for films such as Edward Scissor Hands, Nightmare on Elm street, Pirates of the Caribbean and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. One of the first mainstream actors to vape on screen in the 2010 film the tourist.
4. Lindsay Lohan
Lindsay Lohan: Beginning her career as a childhood star. She is probably best known for her troubles off screen with numerous run ins with the law and several stints in rehab. Also known for films such as Mean Girls, The Parent Trap, Freaky Friday and Herbie Fully Loaded. Regularly papped vaping.
5. Jack Nicholson
Jack Nicholson: With a body of work spanning almost 60 years. He is known for starring in incredibly iconic films such as Batman, The Shinning, One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest and The Departed. Regularly spotted vaping at sporting events and signings.
6. Ben Affleck
Ben Affleck: His career exploded after he and childhood friend, Matt Damon won awards for their screenplay Good Will Hunting. Known for films such as Armageddon, The Sum of All Fears, Dazed and Confused and Pearl Harbour. Regularly papped vaping in his car.
7. Catherine Zeta Jones
Catherine Zeta-Jones: Swansea born Zeta-Jones is probably best known for marrying Michael Douglas. She’s also known for films such as Entrapment, Oceans Twelve, The Terminal and Intolerable Cruelty. Reportedly took up vaping when her husband was diagnosed with throat cancer.
8. Julie Louis-Dreyfus
Julia Louis-Dreyfus: Essentially really only known for one thing, her work on the sit-com Seinfeld. Seinfield was one of the highest grossing shows in TV history. Also known for her work in TV shows such as Veep, Curb your Enthusiasm and Saturday Night Live. Spotted vaping a cig-a-like at the Golden Globe awards.
9. Sarah Silverman
Sarah Silverman: With an incredibly varied career, she is probably best known as a stand-up comedian. Also known for her parts in School of Rock, A Million Ways to Die in the West, Funny People and Wreck-it Ralph. Spotted vaping on the red carpet at the 2014 Emmy awards.
10. Tom Hardy
Tom Hardy: London Born Hardy was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2018 for his services to drama. Best known for films such as Inception, The Dark Knight Rises, Rocknrolla and Venom. Often vaping in interviews as seen here.
Vaping in films and television
As mentioned earlier vaping in Pop Culture is quite sparse but here’s a few of our favourite places we’ve seen vaping make an appearance.
1. Sex Tape
Sex Tape is a film released in 2014 starring Jack Black, Jason Segel and Cameron Diaz.
Just an FYI, probably best not searching Jack Black Sex Tape on Google for obvious reasons. In this scene you can see Jack Black puffing on an e-cigarette for his role as the owner of YouPorn.
2. The Simpsons
The Simpsons has made a few references to vaping over the years. In 2015 an episode entitled “Let’s Go Fly A Coot” shows Bart being introduced to vaping and buying his vaping supplies from the Kwik-E Mart.
The episode attracted a bit of controversy after showing Maggie, the baby – vaping away. In the clip below Groundskeeper Willie is shown vaping… with bagpipes…
3. Broke Girls
The historically unfunny CBS comedy, 2 Broke Girls premiered in 2011, starring Beth Behrs and Kat Dennings.
Luckily for everyone concerned it was cancelled in 2017 after 6 series. The clip below depicts some hipsters at a diner vaping.
4. Family Guy
Family guy is another animation series with a lot of references to vaping. In the 2018 episode entitled “Dead Dog Walking” Stewie and Chris get addicted to vaping.
5. Bad Neighbours and Dirty Grandpa
Zac Efron is a long time vape user, and he continues to use them in his movies. From a standard pen-style device in 2014’s Bad Neighbours to a high powered, cloud chasing mod in Dirty Grandpa.
Vaping in Video Games and Music Videos
It might be rare to see vaping in pop culture, but it is even rarer to see vaping represented in both the gaming and music industries.
The music industry has been heavily criticised by media outlets in recent years for glamourising cigarettes and drinking as seen here . Will we see a switch to vaping?
1. The Sims
The Sims is arguably one of the most popular gaming series’ and has always been known to be highly modifiable by users. It is now possible to download an Mod extension.
2. Vape Master
Vape Master is a mini-game centred around vaping. The aim of the game is to blow out the right amount of vapour at exactly the right moment – seems simple enough!
3. Run- Foo Fighters
Foo Fighter’s latest release, Run has a climatic final scene where Dave Grohl, playing an elderly man in a nursing home using an e-cigarette.
